STATS

Baník Ostrava: Wasteful Mladá Boleslav frustrated by inspired goalkeeper.

FK Mladá Boleslav will consider themselves unfortunate to have emerged empty-handed from a contest in which they enjoyed the greater share of possession and created the clearer opportunities. Aleš Majer's side responded impressively to conceding an early goal, gradually establishing control in midfield and repeatedly exposing spaces within the Bohemians defence. Daniel Langhamer was particularly threatening during the first half, twice finding himself in excellent scoring positions but failing to overcome the outstanding Tomáš Frühwald. After the interval, Martin Šubert became the visitors' principal attacking threat, producing several dangerous efforts that would have beaten many goalkeepers. Mladá Boleslav finished with 62 per cent possession and five shots on target, compared with just two for the hosts, but their inability to convert promising opportunities ultimately proved costly. Majer expressed frustration afterwards, believing his side had performed well enough to secure at least a draw, while acknowledging that Čermák's exceptional free-kick had punished a momentary defensive lapse. Despite remaining fourth in the table, the defeat represented a third successive away league loss without scoring for the visitors, highlighting a growing concern over their effectiveness in front of goal.

Team preformances

Bohemians Praha 1905: Čermák and Frühwald inspire battling Bohemians victory.

Bohemians Praha 1905 demonstrated tremendous resilience to secure a victory that owed as much to defensive determination as attacking quality. Captain Aleš Čermák once again provided the decisive contribution, producing a magnificent free-kick to score his second winning goal in successive league matches and underline his growing importance to Jaroslav Veselý's side. However, the outstanding individual performance belonged arguably to goalkeeper Tomáš Frühwald, whose series of excellent saves repeatedly frustrated Mladá Boleslav and ultimately proved essential to the result. The defensive trio of Milan Havel, David Lischka and Matěj Kadlec also deserve considerable credit for their commitment under sustained pressure, while Vojtěch Smrž made an important contribution in winning the free-kick that produced the winning goal. Nevertheless, Bohemians struggled to retain possession and offered relatively little attacking threat after taking the lead, managing just 38 per cent possession and two shots on target. Veselý acknowledged afterwards that his side had enjoyed some good fortune, but emphasised the importance of winning difficult matches through determination and collective effort. With six points collected from two home fixtures and consecutive clean sheets, the Klokani can take considerable encouragement from their improving results, even if their overall performance leaves room for improvement.

Match Overview

Bohemians Praha 1905 secured their second successive 1-0 victory in just five days, overcoming fourth-placed Mladá Boleslav in a fiercely contested encounter at Ďolíček. Captain Aleš Čermák proved the match-winner once again, following his decisive header against Baník Ostrava with a spectacular 13th-minute free-kick against his former club. However, the Klokani were forced to defend resolutely for much of the evening as the visitors dominated possession and created several excellent opportunities. Goalkeeper Tomáš Frühwald produced an outstanding performance, repeatedly denying the visitors to preserve Bohemians' slender advantage. The hard-fought victory lifted Jaroslav Veselý's side to ninth in the Chance Liga standings, just two points behind their opponents, and extended their unbeaten home league record against Mladá Boleslav to ten matches.

Key Match Events

First Half: Čermák's spectacular free-kick gives Bohemians the advantage.

Bohemians entered the rearranged sixth-round fixture with renewed confidence following Saturday's victory over Baník Ostrava, and manager Jaroslav Veselý named an unchanged starting eleven. The Klokani began positively, looking to exploit the familiar surroundings of Ďolíček and establish an early foothold against opponents enjoying an impressive start to the season. Petr Mirvald made an encouraging run down the right flank in the opening minutes, while Ladislav Krobot directed an early header wide of the visitors' goal.

The breakthrough arrived in spectacular fashion after just 13 minutes. Vojtěch Smrž dispossessed Jan Zíka on the edge of the Mladá Boleslav penalty area, prompting the visiting midfielder to commit a foul in a dangerous position. Zíka received a yellow card, but the greater punishment was still to come. From approximately 18 metres, captain Aleš Čermák produced a magnificent free-kick that crashed against the underside of the crossbar before finding the net beyond goalkeeper Jiří Floder. It was a goal worthy of the club's legendary former midfielder Antonín Panenka and Čermák's fourth league goal of the campaign, taking him clear at the top of Bohemians' league scoring charts.

The visitors responded strongly to falling behind, gradually taking control of possession and forcing Bohemians deeper into their own half. Mladá Boleslav's Daniel Langhamer became an increasingly dangerous presence, and the attacking midfielder had two excellent opportunities to restore parity. In the 29th minute, Denis Donát's clever chipped pass released Langhamer into the penalty area, but Frühwald spread himself superbly to block the resulting effort. The goalkeeper was called upon again in the 41st minute when Langhamer found himself in another promising position following an intricate passing move, only to be denied by another excellent save.

Although Bohemians occasionally threatened on the counterattack, they struggled to maintain sustained attacking pressure after taking the lead. The visitors enjoyed the greater share of possession and looked increasingly capable of finding an equaliser, but the combination of determined defending and Frühwald's impressive goalkeeping ensured that the Klokani reached half-time with their narrow advantage intact.

Second Half: Inspired Frühwald preserves Bohemians' slender advantage.

The second half developed into a demanding defensive examination for Bohemians as Mladá Boleslav continued to dominate possession and search for a route back into the contest. The visitors introduced Josef Kolářík at the interval and immediately attempted to increase the tempo of their attacking play. Their movement and combination play repeatedly stretched the home defence, although David Lischka, Milan Havel and Matěj Kadlec worked tirelessly to restrict clear opportunities.

Martin Šubert, one of the league's leading goalscorers, became particularly influential as the half progressed. In the 53rd minute, he unleashed a powerful effort from approximately 22 metres that appeared destined for the bottom corner, but Frühwald reacted sharply to turn the ball behind for a corner. Veselý responded by introducing Václav Pilař and Šimon Černý in place of Krobot and Roman Květ in the 56th minute, hoping to provide fresh energy and relieve the mounting pressure.

The increasingly physical nature of the contest contributed to several heated exchanges, most notably around the hour mark when a confrontation developed near the advertising boards behind the Bohemians goal. Frühwald and visiting striker Jiří Klíma were both cautioned following the incident, which was also reviewed by VAR. The interruption did little to change the pattern of play, with Mladá Boleslav continuing to press forward while Bohemians relied upon disciplined defending and occasional counterattacks.

The visitors came agonisingly close to equalising in the 70th minute when Šubert met a loose ball following a corner and struck a powerful half-volley towards the far post. Once again, Frühwald produced an exceptional save to preserve the lead. Moments later, Havel made an important intervention inside the penalty area to prevent Šubert from converting another promising opportunity.

As the closing stages approached, Veselý strengthened his defensive options by introducing Samuel Obinaya and Denis Vala, while visiting manager Aleš Majer committed additional players forward in search of an equaliser. The Klokani increasingly found themselves defending deep inside their own half, but their organisation and determination continued to frustrate the visitors.

Bohemians almost settled the contest in the first minute of stoppage time when Obinaya broke down the left and delivered an inviting pass towards Pilař. The experienced midfielder found himself in an excellent position near the penalty spot but sent his effort narrowly wide. Mladá Boleslav continued to threaten until the final whistle, with substitute Jan Buryán firing wide during a late scramble and goalkeeper Floder even venturing forward for a stoppage-time free-kick.

However, Bohemians survived the final moments to secure another precious three points, completing successive home victories without conceding a goal.

The outcome was decided by a lapse on our part—a slip—and the quality of Aleš Čermák, who struck a fantastic set-piece. It was a match that really deserved a draw, but unfortunately, the home side punished a single mistake. In both games since the international break, we created chances that we should have converted, but the ball just wouldn't go in. What’s particularly frustrating is that, both in Plzeň and today, we were evenly matched with our opponents, yet we’ve come away with nothing on both occasions. After the 70th minute, I got my substitutions wrong—not the players I brought on, but the ones I took off. As for the various controversies, it was a typical match at Bohemians, where the atmosphere is always highly charged. I think it’s unfortunate to assign an inexperienced referee to a game at Bohemians; there were situations that would be very difficult for any official to handle in that kind of atmosphere.

Quotes from the managers

JAROSLAV VESELÝ

ALEŠ MAJER

We followed up on the home win, from this point of view we are satisfied. We had a good start and crowned it with a goal from the penalty spot. Sportingly, we have to admit that the opponent showed quality from the thirtieth minute. I have to praise the well-functioning defense. We fought it back, sometimes luck was on our side. We started losing balloons in the transition phase. In the second half, it was about whether the opponent would arrive or not. We could have scored, but we survived something. It's a hard-earned victory and it's important for team morale.
